Blue Ridge Twin is building a monitoring system for the rivers above Bat Cave, Chimney Rock, and Lake Lure. We are starting with ten sensor nodes and are looking for hosts and partners. First warnings are expected November 2026. Flood alerts will be free. Measured, not assumed.

The Network

Check your location

At ten junctions above Bat Cave, two waters become one, and a sensor just below each reads the combined flow. The amber lines light up, or go online providing warning, when their planned sites go in; today, nobody is watching any of it.

Who This Protects

Three communities. One river.

The Hickory Nut Gorge is shaped like a bowl and it funnels all the water down to the Rocky Broad River, which Bat Cave, Chimney Rock and Lake Lure share. Our network will tie together what is sensed upstream and provide warning to all three communities.

Bat Cave

~17 minutes · up to ~2 hours

From the nearest junction sensor to the US-64 bridge, and up to two hours for water coming off the top of the basin. Ten sensors stand between the headwaters and town.

Chimney Rock

~38 minutes · up to ~2 hrs 20 min

The village sits mid-gorge, where every upstream sensor buys it time. Water off the top of the basin passes every one of the ten stations on its way down the river.

Lake Lure

~52 minutes to the lake head · up to ~2½ hours

The lake and the dam sit at the end of the line, with the most warning of the three. Every station reports before river water reaches the lake head, and the lake itself adds time after that.

Proven in the Blue Ridge

We've already done this.

On August 2, 2026, our pilot station on Big Reed Island Creek in the Virginia Blue Ridge rode a flash flood from the first band of rain to a 10.2-foot crest, reading the water every 15 seconds, all night, on battery, and escalated alerts from advisory at 11:30 PM to evacuate at 2:05 AM. Sensors at the junctions

Sensors powered by a small solar panel with a ~2-foot footprint on host land, reading stream height, rainfall, and soil saturation up to every 15 seconds.

2 · MODEL

A digital twin of the basin

Blue Ridge Twin fuses our stations with USGS, NWS, and FIMAN public weather and watershed data into one live picture of the watershed.

3 · WARN

Alerts that escalate

Advisory → warning → evacuate, emails/push notifications/SMS free to anyone signed up in the gorge, minutes to hours before the water arrives.

When do sensors go in?
We are working on siting and starting to engage partners now. We see the first full batch of sensors available in November 2026, with a select few being delivered earlier.
Who pays for this?
We are self-funding the initial project (of ~10 sensor nodes) in the Hickory Nut Gorge Watershed. Alerts are free for residents, always. Safety will never be behind a paywall.
Is this only for Hickory Nut Gorge?
It starts here, but it won't stop here. What we start together in the gorge will expand to cover Western North Carolina, watershed by watershed.
What do the minutes depend on?
Distance down the channel from the sensor that triggers, a flood wave moves ~7 mph. Every number on the map is computed along the real river, not estimated by eye.
Why not just the gauge at Bat Cave?
NWS gauge BCVN7 sits at the bridge in town. It confirms the flood has arrived. Ten sensors upstream tell you it's coming. Worth noting: for homes downstream of Bat Cave, toward Chimney Rock and the lake, BCVN7 is live, public, and already provides real warning today. Our network adds what it cannot see: everything upstream of Bat Cave.
